Committed to progress, the Government of the Emirate of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, called for an expanded, centralized wastewater treatment system for public health reasons and the preservation of precious water resources.
The Government asked Elwan Group Limited, a leading developer-owner and operator of institutional class infrastructure and real estate assets, to develop a strategy for the region’s wastewater systems. Elwan Group proposed a plan for the phased construction of a wastewater treatment system for the City of Fujairah and the surrounding area.
In 2002, the Government of Fujairah approved the Elwan Group plan, granting TANQIA an exclusive 33-year concession to design, finance, construct, own, operate, maintain, and expand the wastewater treatment plant.
On May 10, 2005, His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Mohamed Al Sharqi, the Ruler of Fujairah, placed a cornerstone at the site of Fujairah’s wastewater treatment system, marking the commencement of the first two phases of construction. The Company commenced commercial operations in February,2009, providing the region with quality wastewater treatment services at reasonable costs.
